Hands
Splashing warm water into
The blue rimmed enamel basin
With rusty chips,
Shower gel foaming,
She moved towards the bed.
Her father's eyes upon the ceiling,
Hands limp upon his chest,
Not knowing, not caring.

Singing softly, placing
The big hands in the water
Washing and massaging gently
Hands that had rowed the currach,
Fished for mackerel, hefted
Stones too big for him.

Smiling now, knowing her,
Eyes closing, life ebbing.
